As anticipation builds for his upcoming No Rap on Sunday Tour, spanning 26 cities across the U.S. and Canada, acclaimed indie hip-hop artist Kota the Friend and his team at Flight Boys Music & Entertainment are opening the door for independent artists to shine.
Today on Instagram Kota announced the No Rap on Sunday Open Verse Challenge, inviting independent artists, and those signed to pure independent labels, from any of the tour cities to create and record an original open verse to his track “No Rap on Sunday.”
“No Rap on Sunday” is the title track of Kota’s new album, which features high-profile collaborations with artists including Big Sean, Fivio Foreign, and Liana Bank$, as well as Kota’s son, King Kota and artist, Jae Lou, who has the ability to be a big name in the drill rap game.
This challenge is far more than an online competition. One winner from each tour city will earn the opportunity to perform live on-stage during Kota’s show in their hometown. These winners will have a unique chance to showcase their talent live in front of real hip hop fans.
Taking it a step further, Kota will also gift each city’s winner with an exclusive 8-bar feature verse on their next single, which is a powerful co-sign from one of independent hip-hop’s leading figures, designed to help indie artists elevate their careers.
“I’ve been independent my whole career, and it’s allowed me to create freely, build my own businesses, purchase investment property and connect directly with fans on my own terms,” says Kota the Friend. “This challenge is about giving other indie artists the same kind of real shot. I know how hard it is to break through without the machine behind you. I want to be the helping hand I wish I’d had when I was coming up.”
Kota the Friend has crafted a successful path outside the major label system. He owns his own record label, publishing company, real estate and apparel brand, all under the FLTBYS (Flight Boys) umbrella. A visionary creative, trained musician, producer, and filmmaker, Kota leads a lean team of professionals specializing in marketing, technology, branding, corporate partnerships, and media.
