A-F-R-O: Independent Hip-Hop Rapper and Producer Behind Trap Door 2

A-F-R-O, short for All Flows Reach Out, is an independent hip-hop rapper and producer who turned a viral teenage freestyle into a decade-long, self-released catalog. Born James Gutierrez, he became an emcee after hearing Eric B. & Rakim’s “Microphone Fiend” at age 9. He began going by “A-F-R-O” at 13, putting out his first EP, Modest World, in 2014.

The Viral Rise

At 17, he entered R.A. the Rugged Man’s rap-flow contest, and R.A. became his mentor. Freestyle videos filmed by R.A. garnered millions of YouTube views, and the pair toured internationally. Mainstream TV followed: The Queen Latifah Show in October 2014, then The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on June 16, 2016. Questlove is quoted saying, “A-F-R-O is the future of Hip-Hop.” A-F-R-O has returned the admiration, saying of R.A., “Yo, he’s my number one.”

A-F-R-O POLO and Big-Name Collaborations

A-F-R-O POLO, his July 2016 project with producer Marco Polo on Duck Down Records, features Pharoahe Monch and has nearly 10 million streams. He has since landed features with Gift of Gab (a video with over 15 million views), Diamond D, Twista and Talib Kweli, and appeared in Fortnite in 2022.

Independent by Design

Starting in 2023, A-F-R-O began producing his own projects, releasing most of them through his own FRO Thizzle Productions. This made him a fully independent artist, with complete control over his catalog. The self-produced AFRODEEZEAK trilogy ran through 2025, with Slug on the finale. He also made “Posse Part 3,” a single track featuring 80 emcees that earned an IndieX Film Festival nomination. Trap Door, an 11-year passion project released December 26, 2025, brought in Reks, Termanology, Blu, and comedian Will Sasso. He also remained active outside of the music business, playing D-Rome on VH1’s The Breaks and running the YouTube series FRO Thizzle Reviews.

Why A-F-R-O Matters

A-F-R-O’s influences include Sean Price, MF Doom, Rakim, and DJ Premier. He actually has a collab with Premier dating back to 2015, which remains unreleased. Like the most dedicated artists, A-F-R-O shows that a viral moment can become a sustainable independent career.
