Maxi PriestÔÇÖs ÔÇ£Close To YouÔÇØ was one of my favorite reggae songs growing up. I fell in love with reggae R&B from a very early age.
Coming from London, those are big influences on us. Especially the Caribbean and the Jamaican culture in England is really big. Even our slang is derived from them.
ItÔÇÖs a big part of UK culture. So reggae was always a part of my upbringing.
I happened to be in Los Angeles writing a bunch of different songs like IÔÇÖve been doing and itÔÇÖs sunny and I happened to be playing some old throwback stuff. When I put on some of that reggae stuff, together with the sun, that vibe was something else. I literally felt like I was in the Caribbean on a vacation.
Look at the power of music. It makes you feel a certain way. So that stuck with me and I went to the studio and was like, ÔÇ£Guy, we need to do something where we blend a little of this reggae and R&B and pop togetherÔÇØ and thatÔÇÖs where we came up with ÔÇ£Make My Love.ÔÇØ
