New Music Friday: 7 Independent Hip Hop Releases to Hear Now

Independent hip hop owned Halloween weekend, with Dallas heavyweights, Zambian trailblazers, and underground cult favorites all dropping new music. Here are seven fresh releases from this week’s releases that deserve a spot in your rotation.

1. BigXthaPlug – Better Over Time

Dallas rapper BigXthaPlug returns to straight rap on this 18-track fourth album, released through UnitedMasters and 600 Entertainment. GloRilla, Lil Yachty, Leon Thomas, and Ava Max all guest, and the Loe Shimmy-assisted single “I Like It” comes with an accompanying video. With more than 10.7 billion global streams behind him, expect it everywhere. After his country-leaning 2025 album, this marks a much welcome return to rap.

2. Sampa the Great – Nu Zamrock

Zambian rapper Sampa the Great blends hip hop, soul, and rock on her third album for Loma Vista, inspired by her uncle’s role in Zamrock pioneers WITCH. In her words, “It is the future remembering where it came from.” Sia and KAMAUU guest, and “Can’t Hold Us” has already appeared on EA FC26 and in a Fortnite trailer. At press time, her London Blue Note shows on November 4 have already sold out.

3. evilgiane & Slimesito – EVILSLIME 2

Surf Gang ringleader evilgiane and rapper Slimesito reunite for the follow-up to their 2024 project EVILSLIME, which landed on multiple 2024 best-of lists. The lead single “Georgia State” showcases crystalline, experimental beats beneath fast-talking verses. The duo’s chemistry is the main draw on this album, with shapeshifting tempos matching Slimesito’s restless delivery. Underground heads will race to share this one.

4. Maliibu Miitch – Sailor Goon

Bronx rapper Maliibu Miitch delivers her official debut album through MNRK, after building her name independently. Singles “Do A Trick” with Rich The Kid and “BBM” with PC set the table for a confident, New York-bred project. Following a steady rollout that began earlier this year, the debut album from a long-buzzing MC should travel fast.

5. Boldy James & Real Bad Man – Strobelight

Detroit’s Boldy James reunites with Los Angeles producer Real Bad Man for their fourth full-length together, which landed midweek as a Bandcamp exclusive. One review says that Boldy frames the Detroit drug trade as a family business over weathered loops and heavy drums. The latest entry in one of underground rap’s most reliable partnerships, the album should give fans of gritty, loop-driven rap plenty to chew on.

6. Saint Abdullah & Eomac – When The Sandbox Has No Edge

Bandcamp Daily named this one an essential release: an instrumental hip hop record that began in a London bedroom with two SP-404s and grew to include Armand Hammer, Richie Culver, and guitarist Che Chen. Expect harsh noise grooves and a footwork-meets-neoclassical curveball. This week’s boldest left-field pick, it features tracks like “Gusgazzler” and “Ten Inch Reverb” that showcase its range.

7. WHY? – Oh Golly / Yes Lord

Yoni Wolf’s veteran project returns with a two-track release on Waterlines, blending indie songwriting, rap and offbeat production. It’s a compact yet curious listen for alt-rap fans and longtime loyalists, and a shoo-in for any alternative hip hop playlist.

From splashy rollouts to bedroom-born experiments, this list proves independent hip hop keeps setting the pace. Check back next Friday for next week’s list of new independent hip hop releases.
