This week’s New Music Friday releases prove that independent hip-hop is thriving outside the spotlight of the major-label machinery. From a decade-in-the-making reunion to a horrorcore cult favorite seemingly coming out of nowhere, here are eight independent releases landing today that deserve a spot in your rotation.
1. Apollo Brown & Skyzoo — Luxury Tax
Ten years after their acclaimed 2016 collaboration The Easy Truth, Detroit producer Apollo Brown and Brooklyn lyricist Skyzoo reunite on their own Escapism Recordings imprint. Early reviews are already calling Luxury Tax one of the year’s best, with soulful, cinematic production paired against Skyzoo’s dense wordplay on themes of duality and growth.
2. Flatbush Zombies — Felony Ring
The Brooklyn trio — who brand themselves “1000% Independent” through their own Glorious Dead Recordings — return with a new full-length. With over a decade of Beast Coast credibility and a massive built-in fanbase, Felony Ring is likely the widest-reaching release on today’s independent list.
3. Bruiser Wolf & Twista — “Barbiturates”
Bruiser Wolf, a mainstay of Danny Brown’s independent Bruiser Brigade collective, links with rap legend Twista for a collision of Detroit grit and rapid-fire Chicago flow. For our money, “Barbiturates” is a genuine intergenerational pairing with strong crate-digger appeal.
4. Your Old Droog — Bread & Butter
The Brooklyn lyricist’s latest solo LP, Bread & Butter takes its name from a childhood memory: after his family relocated from Ukraine, they stretched what little caviar they had by pairing it with cheap, plain bread. Featuring Masta Ace, Oddisee, Evidence, and a Flying Lotus/Georgia Anne Muldrow collaboration, it’s one of the most feature-rich indie rap records of the week.
5. Sematary — “GLOOMROOM” (feat. Ghost Mountain)
The horrorcore/trap-metal artist behind the independent Haunted Mound collective drops a new single called “GLOOMROOM” with longtime collaborator Ghost Mountain. Sematary’s fanbase is famously devoted and highly engaged, making it one of the more attention-grabbing drops on this list.
6. Damien Styles — “STAY ALiVE [PART iii]” ($uicideboy$ Remix)
This remix ties directly into the $uicideboy$’s G*59 universe — one of the most commercially successful fully independent operations in hip-hop. This gives “STAY ALiVE [PART iii]” an immediate audience, with plenty of listeners already invested in what he does next.
7. Ghais Guevara & Greg Zola — “ETERNAL BOY”
The Philadelphia rapper, known for sharp political commentary and a growing critical following, teams with producer Greg Zola for a new single. Titled “ETERNAL BOY”, the single continues Ghais’ run as one of underground hip-hop’s most talked-about young voices.
8. Bizarre — “MERCY”
The D12 alum continues his fully independent solo run with a new single. While some might suggest that the artist benefits from the built-in name recognition of his Eminem-affiliated history, “MERCY” proves that he is carving out his own lane away from any label system.
From a decade-later reunion to an underground horrorcore cult hit, this week’s independent hip-hop crop shows there’s no shortage of quality outside the major-label pipeline. Check back next Friday for another round of the freshest independent releases!
