Detroit rapper Babyface Ray has dropped a new single, “200,” in collaboration with Victor Victor Presents. Released on October 12, 2026, the single isn’t currently associated with an album. It comes on the heels of an active summer on the road and gives Detroit hip hop fans something fresh heading into fall.
What to Expect From “200”
“200” features Ray’s signature flows and production built around earworm hooks. The track is one of a series of singles and short EPs Victor Victor has worked on with a range of artists. On “200,” Ray’s relaxed, conversational delivery rides a beat that stays in your head long after the last note.
From Detroit’s East Side to National Stages
Born Marcellus Register, Ray comes from the east side’s 6 Mile section of Detroit. He started out in the group Team Eastside with fellow Detroit rapper Peezy. His 2021 EP Unfuckwitable hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart and led to festival bookings including Rolling Loud.
FACE, his 2022 debut album, featured guests including G Herbo, 42 Dugg, Wiz Khalifa and Pusha T. It also led to his first sold-out nationwide tour and festival slots at Rolling Loud, Lyrical Lemonade’s Summer Smash and Made In America.
Ray followed that run with MOB. Released in 2022 through Wavy Gang and Empire Distribution, the album featured Lil Durk, Blxst, Nija, and Doe Boy.
XXL also named Ray to its 2022 Freshman class. 2023 saw the release of Summer’s Mine, followed by The Kid That Did in 2024. “Ron Artest,” his collaboration with fellow Detroit rapper 42 Dugg, is certified Platinum.
An Independent Approach That Keeps Working
Ray’s releases have come through Wavy Gang and the independent distributor EMPIRE. His explanation for his rise is notably plain. Asked in 2021 why he was poised to break out, he said, “I just try to stay positive, try to stay working on things.” His consistent output since strongly backs up that statement.
Back on the Road With 42 Dugg
This summer Ray paired with 42 Dugg for the 4 The Trenches Tour, putting two of Detroit’s best-known voices on the same stage city after city. The tour kicked off in early June in Rochester, New York. Later stops included New York City, Atlanta, Minneapolis, Denver, and Los Angeles. A review of the June 12 show in Silver Spring, Maryland, cast Ray’s cool, controlled set as the foil to 42 Dugg’s more explosive performance.
Why Babyface Ray Is a Detroit Independent Artist to Watch
For anyone following independent hip hop, Ray is a useful case study. He releases consistently, stays tied to his city and keeps touring, and he doesn’t depend on a viral moment to keep an audience. A Detroit independent artist with that profile is rarely out of the conversation for long, and “200” is a powerful reminder of why.
