New Shyne alert!

The rapper born Jamal Barrow largely lived outside of the spotlight since his short time shining on Puff Daddy’s Bad Boy roster. Periodically, his name will pop up in the news, as it did recently when he made a surprise appearance at Bad Boy’s reunion show in May via video. In a recent interview, he shares that his name may be in the news even more if a planned run at a political office in Belize, the country where he currently resides.

Shyne’s father, Dean Barrow, is the current Prime Minister of Belize, a position he’s held since 2008, and leader in the United Democratic Party. Shyne himself was deported to the country by the U.S. in 2009 as a non-citizen felon after he served nine years in prison for the infamous club shooting that involved Diddy and J. Lo back in 1999. But, Shyne’s adjusted to his father’s homeland well and appears to have adjusted well, embracing the country, the people and his role as a family member of a high-ranking political figure. He tells Bossip:

“I love Belize. I love what I do for Belize. Everyday I change somebodyÔÇÖs life. My father is the right honorable prime minister of Belize for the last three, consecutive terms, and that gives me access to resources, to power and influence to help poor people, to help people with limited income, people that are struggling and suffering the way I used to as a child. Because my father wasnÔÇÖt always the right, honorable prime minister. He was poor, and his mother used to work in America to put him through law school. So I relate to the struggle of people who are trying to surviveÔǪThat makes more of a difference of any records I could sell, any money I could make.”

It’s that will to work for the people that drives what the “That’s Gangsta” rapper’s hope for what he’ll be doing next in life — following in his father’s footsteps to lead the country. ÔÇ£IÔÇÖm going to be in Parliament in Belize very soon,” he said. “IÔÇÖm going to be leading my nation and contributing to my nation with all the capacity that I have. My father is the right honorable prime minister, and heÔÇÖs retiring and IÔÇÖm succeeding him and my uncle. So I can continue in the legacy of my father and serve the people.ÔÇØ

In the meantime, Shyne says he’s working on new music and a mini-documentary called Shyne, Then, Now and Forever that will be out later this year.
