“When I was growing up, I only looked at buildings. That’s why I brought this art show home,” legendary producer Swizz Beatz said passionately while explaining the decision to bring his art gallery back to the South Bronx. That statement alone struck a cord because it’s true for a lot of us natives.
No Commission isn’t your ordinary art event. In partnership with Bacardi, Swizz Beatz is displaying the works of over 20 artists in a warehouse for four days without charging anyone for tickets, provided free endless drinks, and booked some of hip-hop’s hottest talent to perform. Living out its name, the art gallery does not take any commission from sold art pieces. The artists take home 100% of the profit which is unheard of in the art world. Adding to the already friendly nature of things, the event was strategically planned to begin on the 43rd anniversary of Kool Herc’s first party in the South Bronx, which is credited to be what kick-started the birth of hip-hop.
Take an exclusive look inside ‘No Commission’ through my lens as I take you on a journey of day one, which also featured a performance from A$AP Rocky.
