Chance The RapperÔÇÖs ÔÇÿSame DrugsÔÇÖ Gets Reworked By Spectacular Diagnostics And The Drums Finally Drop

From the very first spin of Chance The Rapper’s “Same Drugs,” I was entranced by the beat. Between the evolving piano chord melodies, charismatic background vocals, and sparse 808 drums, the beat is borderline mesmerizing, mostly because the mood feels like it’s constantly building towards something.

Yet, even as Chano eventually comes in with his coming of age relationship lyrics and blends perfectly with the production’s simple innocence, there’s a feeling of let down once the song ends.

The drums never drop. Unlike nearly every single other rap song in existence, there is no kick drum. Furthermore, the snare is a minimal 808 clap. Their absence is not a bad thing necessarily, the mood is just unsettling.

Well, Spectacular Diagnostics apparently felt the same way. The Chicago producer has taken track five from Chance’s latest release and added his own live drum kit and bassline, along with some digital delights and sexy sax licks. Not only does he give the song what it’s been missing in my mind, the vibe shows how different the original could have been with more emphasis production and less on Chance. Realistically, it would’ve nice to see what SD could’ve done had he actually had the song’s broken out stems.

What do you think? Still prefer the original or does Spectacular Diagnostics’ version give “Same Drugs” the oopmh you were looking for?
