Fresh off a performance at Lollapalooza 2016, Kehlani makes more waves with today’s Zane Lowe World Record, “Gangsta.” The “raw, broken, yet haunting” track, as Suicide Squad director David Ayer described it, is the latest song from the film’s soundtrack, following “Heathens” by twenty-one pilots and hip-hop cuts “Sucker for Pain” and “Purple Lamborghini.”
“Gangsta” is about a dysfunctional relationship, which is a familiar topic for Kehlani, both in her music and in her personal life — the 21-year-old reportedly attempted to take her own life earlier this year after what turned out to be unsubstantiated rumors about a love triangle with ex-boyfriend Kyrie Irving and PARTYNEXTDOOR.
In a slight teaser, Ayer confirmed the track accompanies a developing relationship between Jared Leto’s Joker and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad when pressed by Zane Lowe.
It just blends into the fabric of the film. It speaks a lot to relationships and making a choice. And at the same time, there’s also power into surrendering to somebody.
Kehlani has been on a nice run lately, releasing the powerful “CRZY” and the steamy “Distraction” last month. Seems like the Tsunami Mob leader is in a good place at the moment, and it’s allowed her to produce some great music.
