Saint Joe Puts Rap Pride Over Money: ÔÇ£If YouÔÇÖre Garbage, I Will Not Do A Song W/ YouÔÇØ

[With a long-awaited and highly-anticipated “Thinning out the Heard” album arriving Friday (August 5), rapper Saint Joe tells us his process when it comes to collaborations.]

What happened with all of my collaborations on the new album is that I just went with what I felt was the right thing to do. I go through 100 beats just to find 10 that I like and I use 7.

IÔÇÖm really particular with how I choose my sound. ItÔÇÖs not because IÔÇÖm a d*ck or an a**hole, but because the sound has to tell me itÔÇÖs the right one or else I wonÔÇÖt use it.

The first time I heard the beat for ÔÇ£Check My R├®sum├®ÔÇØ I knew it was going to be one of the singles, I knew it was going to be the real one. Then I heard ÔÇ£Being RealÔÇØ and knew that was another one and the same thing with ÔÇ£Homicide Fresh.ÔÇØ

When I went with what songs to come up with, I listened to the beats to see what they were telling me. I would ask myself, ÔÇ£Am I writing a second verse? Am I writing the hook?ÔÇØ I just went with a 100 percent feel as long as it felt right.

The songs really came about from meeting different people and realizing they would be good on certain songs. That was true for every track on the new album with the exception of Chris Rivers and Chino XL. Those are two that I knew I had to get from a friend of a friend.

I started deciding I wanted to test myself against people from my own state. If you are garbage, I will not do a song with you no matter how good of friends we are because itÔÇÖs disrespectful for me to lie to you.

IÔÇÖm not going to say IÔÇÖm the best. I do it as a hobby that IÔÇÖm really good at. I put $20,000 into ÔÇ£Thinning Out The HeardÔÇØ from my own pocket. I really did this album on my own.

So IÔÇÖm not going to bastardize my art by putting on someone who is terrible by getting on a track with them. There are people who make money and tour and I still will not do tracks with them.

ThatÔÇÖs just my philosophy and thatÔÇÖs how the album came together.
