Washington Heights Independent Rapper And Producer LIFEOFTHOM Breathes Life Into NY Underground Scene

Few independent artists in New York have built as consistent a catalog as LIFEOFTHOM. The Washington Heights rapper and producer has moved from late-2010s EPs to projects with Plain Pat and Supah Mario, largely on his own terms.

Washington Heights Roots

LIFEOFTHOM is a New York native — from Washington Heights, to be specific — who has become one of the city’s most distinctive underground rap voices. He came up in the late 2010s with early EPs including Thomas and Robot Jesus.

Formerly known as THOMAS, the artist’s first project was a four-track collaboration with a friend, Jackery, followed by years spent sharpening his craft. He describes the Heights as a lasting crossroads of New York, a neighborhood that stays gritty, raw, and stylish.

A Self-Made Breakthrough

The artist’s 2021 project FLOOR11 helped reinforce his independent footing. Created during quarantine, it was entirely self-written and self-produced. The album draws on dark, experimental production, with influences including Kurt Cobain, Tyler, the Creator, and Ab-Soul. LIFEOFTHOM’s own press page sums up the sound as “conscious introspection meets subconscious ascension.”

Crucial Collaborations

LIFEOFTHOM tends to work closely with one or two producers per project. COCOTASO, made with Stoic, arrived in 2024, the same year he met Plain Pat. He met the veteran producer on March 27, 2024, and the two were in the studio together about two months later. The resulting album, Driving Blind, has been called one of his most acclaimed works. One standout, “XO TOUR LIFE,” grew out of a riff caught on Pat’s analog controller during mixing.

In 2026, the artist linked with Supah Mario, a producer with credits on hits for Drake, Young Thug, and Lil Uzi. Their EP Re Route: Reflection arrived in early April. LIFEOFTHOM has also teamed up with Kota the Friend and CJ Fly on “I O U,” and with Meechy Darko on “Can’t Help.” Live, he has opened for IDK, Marlon Craft and Conway the Machine.

Craft, Work Ethic and a Producer’s Ear

Consistency is his calling card. He describes a “Verse a Day” routine of writing a new verse daily to keep his skills sharp. Press coverage also notes the care he puts into visuals, matching the intensity of his music. He produces much of his own material and has said he’d like to produce full projects for New York peers such as Nali, Lord Sko and Yoshi T. He points to “42ND ST.” with Lord Sko as the moment he felt the scene shift, and he counts Fergie Baby, Niko Brim and Kai Ca$h among his close peers. His creative philosophy is simple: “I’m inspired by being 100% authentic.”

Why LIFEOFTHOM Belongs on Your Radar

LIFEOFTHOM is the kind of independent artist NYC hip hop fans should know: a Washington Heights rapper-producer with a self-produced debut, a run of respected collaborations and a steady release schedule. Among these is “Save the Day,” which features Ben Reilly and Kai Ca$h and dropped in late August 2026. For listeners tracking New York’s next wave of underground hip hop, LIFEOFTHOM’s catalog is a good place to start.
