Red PillÔÇÖs ÔÇÿGin And TonicÔÇÖ Finds Optimism In The Face Of Adversity

Mello Music Group

When I interviewed Red Pill about the Ugly Heroes album, Everything In Between, he described his forthcoming solo album, Instinctive Drowning, as “dark and vulnerable.” Now the Detroit MC has released the second single, and while I can’t disagree with his assessment, I would say he still manages to find light within the darkness.

Yes, “Gin and Tonic” is about the consequences of alcoholism and depression, but after all the introspection and self-pity (“F*ck it, look what I’ve done to me/All I do is drink and eat/Lay around and f*cking sleep”), Red Pill realizes he has his family and friends to live for.

“All I want is to be happy in this life I got And Lord I try but I don’t truly know if I can stop If I would die for them Then I should live for them”

And so, while Red Pill’s writing may be inspired by negative feelings he’s trying to work through, the message is there’s still hope to be found no matter how sh*tty life gets.

Instinctive Drowning is entirely produced by Ohio’s Ill Poetic and is scheduled for release August 26 on Mello Music Group. Pre-order it on Bandcamp and iTunes.
