J.Cole has a history of going hard on guest verses following prolific projects, and the same seems to be true following fire features with Benny the Butcher and YG. Cole shows off his versatility and range by collaborating with artists who could be deemed as dissimilar to him. This strategy has kept him relevant, and on the radar of both the new-school and old head rap fan.
Two weeks ago, J.Cole appeared on Benny the Butcher’s single Johnny P’s Caddy. Dreamville’s head honcho came with some real heat, questioning the truthfulness of rappers who constantly spit about guns and drugs: (“Around the outlines of chalk where the corpses lying/of course I’m trying to revive a sport that’s dying/but the guns and the drug bars that why all relying/got these nerds thinking that you N*ggas hard as I am.”)
Cole’s choice to unleash a verse containing this subject matter has been hotly debated, as a great deal of Benny the Butcher’s lyrics pertain to the topics he is discrediting. However, the Buffalo, NY rapper came correct with two solid verses himself, bolstering a great collaboration.
On Friday, Cole appeared on a verse with rappers YG and Moneybagg Yo on YG’s single Scared Money. The Compton rapper set another big stage, with a hard beat, and heavy bars, and Cole responded, less so with strong lyrics, and more so with technical ability and flow. The video is also paired with a eye catching music video.
If we consider recent history, these two features are indicative of much more to come; expect to hear J.Cole’s name pop up on more artist’s singles, videos, and projects.
