New Music Friday: Statik Selektah’s All-Star Single, a Fan-Funded Poe Tribute, and 5 More Essential Indie Hip-Hop Drops (October 16)

This Friday is a virtual gift bag of indie hip-hop delights, to say the least. From a Statik Selektah supergroup single to a UK underground crossover and a fan-funded literary tribute, these seven releases definitely earn a place in your queue.

1. Statik Selektah ft. Ab-Soul, Raekwon & Freddie Gibbs, “Champagne Wishes”

The lead single from Statik’s Expensive Taste, due November 6 via Mass Appeal and his Showoff imprint, follows “The Louvre” with another stacked lineup over soulful, looped production. Raekwon brings a luxury-themed verse, while Statik calls Gibbs’s contribution “one of the best verses of the year”. “Champagne Wishes” is but one example of the album’s top-tier lyricism.

2. fakemink & Skepta, “Chiltern Firehouse.”

London’s DIY underground star releases “Chiltern Firehouse.” on his own EtnaVeraVela label, pairing his hazy, lo-fi sound with a razor-sharp Skepta verse. The pair’s link-up traces back to Warsaw’s CLOUT Festival, where both performed, and both also appear in a Stone Island campaign. This single in particular was co-produced by fakemink with Angelus and Musa.

3. LUCKI, Last Laugh (archive tape)

Released through EMPIRE, Last Laugh arrives months after Dr*gs R Bad topped Billboard’s Independent Albums chart. For LUCKI’s devoted online fanbase, this tape is like coming across buried treasure.

4. Black Star, No Fear of Time

Yasiin Bey and Talib Kweli’s Madlib-produced reunion album is exclusively available on Qobuz, its first appearance on a traditional streaming platform. Recorded in hotels and dressing rooms rather than a studio, No Fear of Time first came out in 2022 via Luminary, with a 2024 physical release on Rhymesayers. Although it isn’t a new album strictly speaking, its streaming debut is a noteworthy chapter for one of underground rap’s defining duos.

5. Z-Ro, Forever King

The Houston veteran and Screwed Up Click member delivers 15 tracks through One Deep Entertainment and SoSouth Music Distribution. With noticeable R&B flavor, Forever King features Keiara Trenae on the title track.

6. KXNG Crooked, West Coast ’96

The Long Beach rapper and former Slaughterhouse member releases an 11-track, 32-minute album called West Coast ’96 through Hitmaker Music Group and Hitmaker Distro. The title track arrived as a single in June, and the tracklist pairs it with ‘West Coast ‘26,’ a then-and-now nod for longtime West Coast fans..

7. MC Lars, The Edgar Allan Poe LP (First Anniversary Edition)

Funded by 385 Kickstarter backers and rooted in his independent Horris Records, the nerdcore pioneer’s Poe concept album returns as a 19-track edition with seven bonus recordings: three new 2026 versions and four songs from his 2012 Poe EP. Lars himself says: “I’ve been rapping about Poe since before I had any business doing it.” Based on the lead single, “Amontillado,” which features Watt White, business is booming.

From a Houston veteran to a Kickstarter-backed nerdcore pioneer, this varied array of independent hip-hop releases proves that the form not only exists, but flourishes outside the major-label spotlight. Check back next Friday for another round of fresh independent releases!
