A few months ago, Kanye West decided it was time to┬áwork with IKEA, the internationally popular Swedish furniture store.┬áHe was inspired after visiting one of their stores (or factories) in Sweden, and just couldn’t wait to share his designs with the rest of the world. Clearly a believer in the philosophy that if you put something out in the universe enough times it’ll happen, Kanye continued his “IKEEZY” merger talk yesterday during a┬áBBC Radio 1 interview. As it turns out, however, IKEA has no desire to carry any of his designs in their gigantic mazes.
The corporation provided the following statement to CNBC:
“At IKEA we are constantly curious about different people, companies, artists and events around the world. To have these connections and inspiring meetings is an important way for us to find new ways to create a better everyday life for the many people. Although we are really flattered by Kanye West’s high interest in IKEA and the speculation around a joint venture, we have no plans to collaborate at this point in time.”
Seems West’s grandiose plans are actually┬ádream deferred as hopes are dashed.┬áYet he┬ádid all he could to frame this as a venture that would not just benefit his brand and theirs, but the consumers as well.┬á“I have to work with IKEA,” he told the BBC, adding: “Make furniture for interior design, for architecture.”
Not just any furniture, mind you, but things built specifically for college dorms. Something minimalist but fly. You know, like those $30 white tees that seem more at home in the world of Derek Zoolander than ours.
Maybe one day we can all sleep on a bed or eat dinner on a table┬ádesigned┬áby West,┬ábut not today. Kanye’s desire to make inroads in the world of fashion and design are well-documented, but IKEA’s┬ásaying “no” didn’t require an┬áEnglish to Swedish translation.
