Lil Durk isn’t so little anymore. The 23-year-old rapper is expanding his sound beyond the brand of drill music which fueled his rise and exploring a more introspective side with the help of Ty Dolla $ign and Dej Loaf, while still maintaining his street roots by collaborating with Future and Young Thug.
The Chicago rapper recently sat down with RESPECT to talk about his sophomore album, Lil Durk 2X, his evolution as an artist, and naturally, his hometown.

On his goals for Lil Durk 2X:
We wanted it to have more potential hits. We didnÔÇÖt just wanna give them anything, you know? A lot of the music has been serious; on this I wanted it to be club bangers, songs for females, stuff like that instead of just all street music.
On the process of picking collaborators:
I really just had fun with it [choosing features] this time around; itÔÇÖs way better like that. When I was making Lil Durk 2X, I just used my relationships. I said who I wanted on it, made some calls and they sent it through.
On branching out as an artist:
I just wanna feel good. Like when I made ÔÇ£Super Powers,ÔÇØ that day I just wanted to make some feel-good music. ItÔÇÖs catchy but different. Unless I have something on my mind I wanna get out, records are all about how I feel. Everything starts to sound the same, too, so as an artist, you have to try different things to see what works.
On violence in Chicago and responsibility to make change:
When I speak on it, IÔÇÖm not happy to say it, but itÔÇÖs violent. ItÔÇÖs crazy. I hope and wish for it to get better, and weÔÇÖre gonna do all we can to slow it down, you know? The violence probably wonÔÇÖt ever stop, but weÔÇÖre gonna slow it down. IÔÇÖm with it; I know other rappers from Chicago are with it, we all with it. Anybody with a voice has a responsibility anyway.
