We’ve done way too many eulogies in 2016, so much so that it can become hard to keep track. With that in mind, the hip hop community still mourns the death of the legendary Phife Dawg after his passing in┬áMarch. In an effort to ensure that he’ll never be forgotten, the city he repped for on an everyday basis is naming a street after him. Fittingly, it’s a block he helped make famous.
Phife’s┬ámanager informed OkayPlayer that Linden Blvd and 192nd St. in Queens will be formally renamed Malik “Phife Dawg” Taylor Way. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio will make it official on August 3 with a ceremony at City Hall.
There’s been no official announcement yet, but if the word is coming from his manager then it may as well be gospel. If you’ve heard┬á“Check The Rhime,” then you know how special “the boulevard of Linden” is to the legacy of A Tribe Called Quest and to Phife’s development as an MC and as a man. Because of that song and the video, their neighborhood became synonymous with hip hop, so it’s only appropriate that his name be forever etched on top of it.
Even living in Georgia, the Five Foot Assassin never left the city and the city never left him. His love of the city was so strong that he continued to cheer for the Knicks. In public. Now, that’s diehard fandom.
“Back in the day on the Way of Malik “Phife Dawg” Taylor” doesn’t quite have the same ring to it, but it’s very┬átouching and really cool.
