The Roots legend Questlove has teamed up with author S. A. Cosby to release his latest book, The Rhythm of Time. The recently published book has quickly gained popularity, achieving a place in the top 5 of Amazon’s bestseller list. Just a few days after its release on Tuesday, April 18th, The Rhythm of Time topped the category of “Children’s Action and Adventure Books.”
This heartwarming story follows the adventures of two young Black “nerds”, Rahim Reynolds and Kasia Collins. The duo love to build and test crazy gadgets, channeling their “inner nerd”. However, their latest invention, a special cellphone, takes Rahim on an unexpected trip back to 1997. Eventually, he must find his way back to the present with the help of his friends.
In an interview with The View, Questlove revealed that he was inspired to write for his younger self. Who he remembers often struggled to find books that featured characters that looked like him. The book is also aimed at other Black “alt-kids” who may feel like they don’t fit in because they don’t talk or look a certain way. “I want them, Black nerds, to see themselves, as well,” Quest shared.
To illustrate the power of family and friendship, The Rhythm of Time explores how good intentions can lead to dire circumstances. With its fast-paced narrative and relatable characters, this book is sure to capture the hearts of readers between the ages of 8 and 12.
Questlove’s dedication to promoting diversity and inclusion in literature is commendable. This latest book is a testament to his commitment to ensure that Black children see themselves represented in the media. Fans of The Roots, and hip-hop culture should be happy to support this noble cause. If you have a child, or are just interested in checking out The Rhythm of Time, you can order it here.
