20-year-old New York emcee Sammyoffthewall dropped his latest single Cancel On Me last Friday. The poetic new release sees Sammy paired up with producer frank.e to create an energetic, catchy, and lyrical track.
With classic boom-bap instrumentation and heavy drum patterns, Sammyoffthewall traverses the beat with ease. Throughout his discography, he consistently demonstrates tight flow, smooth switch-ups, and magnetic lyricism. This newest drop is no different. Dynamic delivery and incisive cadence give Cancel On Me the kind of head-nodding, mean-mugging flare that spurs replay value.
Sammy meshes tight verses with a layered hook, propelling him into a dope second verse. Initially, the instrumental melody is stripped away adding power to the dope bass line and Sammyoffthewall’s mercurial flow. “Champion is Sammy himself I walked through valleys Isolated/come out unscathed, we graduated/crash every thought in my head, now my mind’s augmented/no skill share rented I’m all authentic like me with a chemist.”
Strong internal rhyme schemes and old-fashioned New York Bravado give Cancel On Me a distinct 90s-type feel. So much so, that’s hard to imagine at times that a 20-year-old artist could orchestrate such a sound. But Sammy modernizes that classic sound with elements from today’s hip-hop. Infusing an appreciation for hip-hop history with new techniques that give his music an identity of its own.
Cancel On Me is Sammyoffthewall’s first solo drop since May ‘22 EP The Foundation, a must-listen for fans of the Web Collective rapper’s indelible flows and potent lyricism. The successful release unlocked opportunities for him to perform at NYC venues such as S.O.B’s and Purgatory. Sammy undoubtedly left an exclamation point on a successful 2022 with Cancel On Me. Look for more exciting drops, live performances, and plenty more meaningful collaborations from this rising talent headed into the new year.
