Los Angeles Flight Night: Artist Spotlight – JUICEB☮️X

As the Los Angeles stop of Kota the Friend’s Flight Night Hip Hop Festival approaches, it is essential to remember the true purpose of the tour, and of the fltbys brand. In a video shared last week to the fltbys’ Instagram page, that mission was clearly restated:

Ever since 2008 we’ve been giving people the opportunity to get on stage, when no one else was giving the opportunity,” said Kota.  “Fltbys has always been a young company of people who just want to do something but have no platform.”

Embracing the concept to connect up-and-coming talent with their community, we will highlight a stacked lineup of opening acts in LA, who will bless the mic prior to Kota taking the stage at The Vermont Hollywood on Friday, February 25th.   One of those performers will be multitalented and poetic emcee JUICEB️X.

“Kota is an extremely talented artist. He embraces vulnerability & speaks his truth and I fuck with him for that.”

A staple in the lofi/chillhop community since the Soundcloud era, JUICEB☮X has consistently captured minds and imaginations with his heady bars, smooth cadence, and experimental layering. It is hard, in one word, or several, to characterize Juice’s music by genre; he commonly refers to himself as “Ellen DeGenreless”.  A multi-instrumentalist, and producer (many tracks are self-produced) his sound draws influence from boom-bap hip hop, R&B, psychedelic rock, and punk. These elements are fused through incisive writing, and lyricism, wrought with imagery, emotion, and social awareness. Outside of his solo career, JUICEB☮X is 1/2 of indie psych R&B duo Figmore.

Originally from Ossining, NY, JUICEB☮X has found a new home in LA, moving three years ago.  The number of artists in the city, and their collaborative nature is a feature that has allowed him to feel both welcomed, and motivated: “LA is a beautiful place! I love how community driven the music scene is & how easy it’s been to meet and connect with other artists. The weather is pretty swell as well.”  With a stable full of talented musicians lined up on the Flight Night roster, it is inevitable this will be an opportunity for him to make more impactful connections within the Los Angeles music scene.

While JUICEB️☮X’s entire discography is ripe with genreless gems his 2021 10-track project Overthin King is especially noteworthy, as it was entirely self-produced.  Featuring a kaleidoscopic arrangement of sounds, Overthin King sees Juice morphing into seemingly a separate artist from song to song; from the classic hip hop delivery of Hanging Vines to the delicate melody and harmony of twigg. While the project is certainly reflective of an artist with immense vocal talent, the true genius is in the depth of composition. The project comes alive with unique guitar riffs, intricate phrasing, live drums, and even a trumpet solo on Still Sorry.  Songwriting, flow, and delivery are certainly all delivered at the highest level as well: (“A steady sequence of the prime interweavence of my time as a seamstress/tying up achievements.”)

Taking the stage ahead of Kota the Friend would be a surreal experience for any artist, but JUICEB☮X seems calm, focused, and excited more than anything.  “Man, it means a lot… Kota is an extremely talented artist. He embraces vulnerability & speaks his truth and I fuck with him for that. Couldn’t be happier to support!” Juice’s quiet confidence, and abilities as an artist will undoubtedly lend themselves to a top tier performance in LA.
