In 2003, 50 Cent told us all he walked around with an S on his chest as he became rap’s newest superhero. Fast forward a little over a decade, and he now has the chance to produce his own series about an actual┬ásuperhero.
Tomorrow, Today is the latest brain child from 50, as he’ll not only produce the Starz series, but penned the pilot script.
ÔÇ£This is a project IÔÇÖve been working on for some time,” said 50 at the Television Critics Association. “ItÔÇÖs exciting to watch how people respond to the material because they hadnÔÇÖt seen me as a writer.ÔÇØ
Obviously Starz is already in the Curtis Jackson business with Power and, judging by its ratings and the fact that it just got renewed for another two seasons, business is booming. With that in mind, it makes sense to continue the very lucrative partnership.
Tomorrow, Today isn’t a typical superhero story, though. It’s about a falsely imprisoned military vet from the Southside of Chicago who just so happens to run into a mad scientist type. The scientist begins experimenting on him — as one does when one becomes mad — in hopes of creating the perfect man, turning him into the most efficient killer in all the land. Think of it as┬áthe Terminator-meets-James Bond. He then decides to use his powers for good.
Now, I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out how eerily familiar this sounds. It’s almost as if there’s another character from the inner city who becomes impervious and the perfect killing machine after experimentation and decides to use his powers to help people. It’s on the tip of my tongue… oh, that’s right, Luke Cage.┬áI’m not saying 50 is biting and the final product could easily be its own thing, but on face value, this sounds a lot like the former Avengers leader.
No word on when we’ll get to see the fruits of 50’s labor, but the smart money is on sometime next year.
