Q&A With Rising Providence, RI Underground Artists 3 & Mister E

We are glad to know that the Providence, RI area has a great new experimental Hip Hop group holding down the indie/underground music scene! When was the group formed. How do you know each other? Who long have you guys made music together?

E: We met each other through mutual friends at URI our freshmen year and started making music pretty much immediately, chilling in my dorm room with a midi keyboard and a notebook.  Since then we’ve been working together non-stop, so its been a little under 2 years we’ve made music together

How do you guys feel about the phrase “Experimental Hip Hop”, since is how the BLOG describes your music. Do you agree?

3: I think it represents us pretty well, trying to combine some different styles of hiphop into one.

E: I definitely think that ‘experimental hip hop’ is a category that our music falls under. We kind of just do our thing and try stuff that we think will sound dope. Of course sometimes it comes out like garbage, but when we really hit the mark I think we have some really fresh sounds & there isn’t a whole lot of other artists with a similar sound.

Feel free to breakdown the creative process of your latest album “Thru The Loop”. Why did it take about 1 full year to produce?

E:  This was our first real project together, and probably could be considered our first real project at all. Before any lyrics were chosen for a particular song we spent a lot of time just throwing beats together and freestyling over them, trying to find a clear direction we could take this thing in. Honestly at first I don’t even think we planned to make a full length project, but the more I made beats and Andrew spit over them, we realized people might like what we were bringing to the table. It was a little bit of a chaotic process but it worked for us and I think the results are very rewarding

3:  I really wanted this to run as the prelude to our first tape “In Medias Res” which included the continuation of The Birth & The Beast. The idea of this narrative surrounded by conscious and catchy hooks is the theme to our past two projects and will hopefully be a complete trilogy in the future.

Who are you musical influences?

E:  Most of my musical influences reside in the underground hip-hop or electronic music genre. Some of my favorite producers are Flying Lotus, J Dilla, CL Smooth, Kanye West, & Clams Casino

3:  G.U.R.U. , Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Raekwon, Ab-Soul

Any new music video launching soon? Off the “Thru The Loop” project?

We are working on a few more Instagram clips but no full length videos yet. We’ve talked about possible video ideas we might want to try out, but as of now there is no concrete plan. Don’t be surprised if something drops within the next year.

How often do you guys perform live together?

I have done a few open mics but we have actually never performed. The closest we’ve come to performing live is just showing stuff we come up with to our friends and neighbors at school. As of yet we haven’t had a full-blown gig.

In your opinion, how do you guys feel about the Providence, RI Hip Hop scene today? Is it growing or dying down?

3:  I am from West Newbury in Northshore MA where there is zero hiphop scene. I just recently moved to Providence and am excited to set up shop.

E:  I don’t see much and have not seen any in the past.

Here it is! Our most popular question! What is your definition of “underground hip hop”.

3:  Being original and showing respect to the roots of hiphop.

E:  In my opinion, underground hip hop is the community of artists and fans who tend to break away from mainstream sounds and flows and embrace a concept that hip hop can blossom into a huge variety of unique, artistic sounds. I personally think that underground hip hop holds a lot of raw art that is slept on by many people.
