Avery Marcel Joshua Jones (born October 16, 1992), known by his stage name KOTA The Friend is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer, born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He got his stage name from the Disney movie Brother Bear and is actually a Native American word “Koda” meaning friend.

Kota most recently released his No Rap on Sunday album, which include singles featuring Big Sean and Fivio Foreign. Besides his No Rap on Sunday release, Kota  has released a number of albums and EPs. In 2024 he released Once in a Blue Moon, an album collaboration with Statik Selektah, and in the same year he released Lyrics to Go 5, the 5h installment of his popular Lyrics to Go series.

Kota is a trained musician as well. He started playing the trumpet in the 4th grade, in a Brooklyn public school. He was able to get accepted into music programs in middle school, high school, and college, as a trumpet player. After Kota left college he started his music career, as a writer and performer.

Kota the Friend released his debut mixtape, Palm Tree Liquor in 2016, followed by his second mixtape Paloma Beach in 2017.

In 2018, he released his third mixtape, the lengthier Anything, with 2019 marking the release of his first independent studio album, FOTO, followed by the Lyrics to GO, Vol. 1 compilation in January 2020 and then his second studio album, EVERYTHING, in late May of the same year. Kota then went on to release Lyrics to GO, Vol.2 in January 2021 and the collaborative project To Kill A Sunrise with Statik Selektah later in March. Lyrics to GO, Vol.3 was surprise-released in January 2022, with Kota’s third studio album, MEMO, following in July of that year. Kota the Friend has spent the last couple years of his life traveling the world.

Kota has remained 100% independent  throughout his career—turning down 3 major record labels; instead, creating his own label and apparel brand, FLTBYS (Flight Boys). He frequently cites a do-it-yourself mentality, such as filming his own music videos, recording within a home setup, and producing most of his discography. His mentality was fueled by a desire for freedom and to avoid the sense of musical confinement.

Kota’s music has been featured in movies on Netflix, Amazon Prime, and other streaming platforms.

Mac Dre. Too $hort. E-40. These are some of the names that come to mind when you think of Bay area rap. Now, San Francisco native, Gilbert Milam Jr., better known in the rap game simply as, Berner, has his eye set at being the next great artist to put on for the Bay. Starting off participating in rap battles at local coffee shops and open mic nights in the San Francisco area in 2007, Berner took things to the next level by turning his passion into his career.

This story truly embodies every aspect of the phrase “grassroots.” After creating his own label, Bern One Entertainment, Berner soon after released his debut album, “Track Money & Pack Money,” a joint effort with fellow Bay Area rapper, Equipto. A true testament to his never-ending grind, Berner has released 10 independent albums, several of which have charted on Billboard’s “Top Rap Albums” chart.

In March 2012, Berner teamed up with Wiz Khalifa and signed to his Taylor Gang Records, joining the thriving roster which includes the likes of Chevy Woods, Juicy J, Lola Monroe, Courtney Noelle, Tuki Carter and more. “Urban Farmer,” Berner’s first collection to be released on Taylor Gang Records, was released on October 2, 2012 and quickly took the Internet by storm. “Urban Farmer” captures the essence of Bay Area rap on tracks such as “Shut Up (feat. Chris Brown & Problem).”

With an impressive list of artist collaborations on his resume, ranging from rap legends Bun B and Wyclef to Chris Brown, Curren$y and even fellow Taylor Gang members Wiz Khalifa and Juicy J, Berner is showing no signs of slowing down in the near future. In fact, he’s just getting started.

Always one to master multiple entrepreneurial ventures, Berner isn’t stopping at just music. He has two lifestyle/street clothing lines in the works with “FreshKo” and “Cookies,” as well as his own line of hemp water, appropriately titled “H20.” All told, Berner is letting actions speak louder than words as he is on his way to becoming the future of the Bay Area rap scene.

And he’s making sure you hear him, loud and clear.

Souls of Mischief are a legendary hip-hop group from Oakland, California, and founding members of the influential Hieroglyphics collective. Comprised of A-Plus, Opio, Phesto, and Tajai, the group rose to prominence in the early 1990s with their classic debut 93 ’til Infinity—widely regarded as one of the most important and enduring albums in hip-hop history.

Known for their intricate lyricism, forward-thinking production, and undeniable live chemistry, Souls of Mischief have spent over three decades building a global audience while maintaining full creative independence. As pioneers of the independent hip-hop movement, they helped establish a blueprint for artist ownership and direct-to-fan engagement that continues to influence the culture today.

In 2023, Souls of Mischief completed a record-breaking world tour, selling out venues across North America, Europe, and Oceania.
